Summary

Bone Criers have a sacred duty。 They alone can keep the dead from preying on the living。 But their power to ferry the spirits of the dead into goddess Elara’s Night Heavens or Tyrus’s Underworld comes from sacrifice。 The gods demand a promise of dedication。 And that promise comes at the cost of the Bone Criers’ one true love。

Ailesse has been prepared since birth to become the matriarch of the Bone Criers, a mysterious famille of women who use strengths drawn from animal bones to ferry dead souls。 But first she must complete her rite of passage and kill the boy she’s also destined to love。

Bastien’s father was slain by a Bone Crier and he’s been seeking revenge ever since。 Yet when he finally captures one, his vengeance will have to wait。 Ailesse’s ritual has begun and now their fates are entwined—in life and in death。

Sabine has never had the stomach for the Bone Criers’ work。 But when her best friend Ailesse is taken captive, Sabine will do whatever it takes to save her, even if it means defying their traditions—and their matriarch—to break the bond between Ailesse and Bastien。 Before they all die。

3。5 stars This was a very entertaining read!I definitely think the romance was glossed over, especially since the concept of fated lovers is so intriguing。 Honestly, the characters backstories were not really tackled either。 I would’ve liked to learn more about them separately and together。 I’m hoping the characters are fleshed out more in the sequel。 BUT the world building was great! I love the magic system and location。 They made the story。 I’m diving face first into the sequel。

If you’re a fantasy lover like me, I definitely recommend you read, it’s the first in a duology as well! 。。。more

loved it。 ailesse and sabine remind me of lili and i。 I cannot stand Jules。 I think ailesse and Bastian's relationship could have been done a little better somehow but I still like them。 I don't like Cas so far even though I was originally torn by his initial reaction towards her but I didn't like how he intervened and made her choices for her。 loved it。 ailesse and sabine remind me of lili and i。 I cannot stand Jules。 I think ailesse and Bastian's relationship could have been done a little better somehow but I still like them。 I don't like Cas so far even though I was originally torn by his initial reaction towards her but I didn't like how he intervened and made her choices for her。 。。。more

The worldbuilding was great, but only Sabine and her scenes were interesting。 The other characters were strangled by a forced (and uninspiring) romance, and a very boring plot of sleeping and studying in catacombs。 I would read an entire book of just Sabine’s POV。

I have seen this around for a while and I kept resisting reading it but it was good! Good story and intriguing storyline

Really liked it! Morally grey characters and found family! The story was original and well executed :)

V good read, fast paced, could’ve had a little more slow burn enemies to lovers, but overall still a great read。 Loved the concept of the grace bones。 4。5⭐️

solid 4 stars! i devoured this book in 2 sittings。 i first bought it because the cover was gorgeous and i love charlie bowater! i can say that i didn't have very high expectations because all of the reviews said this book sucked but i thoroughly disagree。 this book is very good! i loved having 3 perspectives, and all of the characters were really lovable too。 (but i sorta didn't like jules but thats another story) i love ailesse, sabine, bastien, and MARCEL。 GOD I LOVE MARCEL! but i thought the solid 4 stars! i devoured this book in 2 sittings。 i first bought it because the cover was gorgeous and i love charlie bowater! i can say that i didn't have very high expectations because all of the reviews said this book sucked but i thoroughly disagree。 this book is very good! i loved having 3 perspectives, and all of the characters were really lovable too。 (but i sorta didn't like jules but thats another story) i love ailesse, sabine, bastien, and MARCEL。 GOD I LOVE MARCEL! but i thought the premise of the story was very cool, i really liked the incorperated mythology, and i loved the magic system。 i just love hard magic systems, so thats definitely one of the reasons i loved this book。 the writing style was very addictive, and the plot was really never slow。 i really do love ailesse, she's just so awesome! oh i also loved the world of this book and the france vibes。 the reason why i took off one star was because of the romance。 i really loved the relationship between Bastien and Ailesse, but i feel like the pacing of it was sorta weird。 like i feel like they hated each other and had so much angst, and then the next second they realized they loved each other。 but i actually like it a lot more that (view spoiler)[ they aren't amoures。 (hide spoiler)] ALSO (view spoiler)[ i literally thought bastien died and was so scared and was about to dump the book in the trash because what an AWFUL ENDING that would've been amiright! (hide spoiler)] but the fact that the romance was paced a little strangely didn't take away my enjoyment of the book and i still love bastien and ailesse's relationship。 well in the end, this was a pretty good read! ok bye! 。。。more

technically 4。5 stars but i loved this book so much so i rounded up“I'm not leaving you。 You are worth the risk, do you hear me? It's so wonderful!) They *acutually* wanted to kill eachother。 It was a nice remider that there are actually good enemies-to-lovers books out there。 I also loved this book because of how many tropes there were in the book (for the main romance) it was just one after another in the best posisble way。 (Bonded together, forced proximity, enemies-to-lovers, misscomunication, unrequited love, etc。) And I also think the realization of feelings was done in a way that felt very natural/ it didn't feel rushed。 I also really enjoyed that the story was told from different perspectives, which made the story and romance flow a lot more easily。 Super exicted to read the next book, and I definetely reccomend! “There's an Old Gallish phrase my father used to say whenever he'd have to leave for a little while。 He'd hold my hand just like this and whisper, 'Tu ne me manque pas。 Je ne te manque pas。' It means 'You're not missing from me。 I'm not missing from you。” 。。。more

3。5/5 StarsThis book is one that I have been very excited to read for quite some time。 The magic system in the book was so interesting and unique, and it was really cool how the gods were intertwined with the magic that was performed。 I loved the three main characters that the book's point of view is from。 It was really intriguing seeing not just the romance aspect, but the aspect of the love of sisters, which I really enjoyed。 I enjoyed the plot line of the story and found it really interesting 3。5/5 StarsThis book is one that I have been very excited to read for quite some time。 The magic system in the book was so interesting and unique, and it was really cool how the gods were intertwined with the magic that was performed。 I loved the three main characters that the book's point of view is from。 It was really intriguing seeing not just the romance aspect, but the aspect of the love of sisters, which I really enjoyed。 I enjoyed the plot line of the story and found it really interesting, but sometimes it felt like we were kind of a dog chasing our own tail and that the plot wasn't really going anywhere。 It made it more difficult for me to feel immersed in the story。 I thought the story was good, I just didn't feel as invested and immersed in it, which is why I didn't give it a full five stars。Overall, I enjoyed this book and the characters that were in it。 I'm curious to see how the story will progress and I'm excited to see how the story will end in the next book! 。。。more

I just realized my original review of this book somehow got deleted I’M SO MAD。 Anyways I ABSOLUTELY ADORE THIS BOOK。 Enemies to lovers and they actually try to kill each other?! The chapters switch between 3 characters, 2 of which are the enemies to lovers couple。 But even so, the 3rd POV didn’t feel discarded or overshadowed at all, and was just as intriguing! I loved the plot twists and the unique story! This is an easy fantasy book to read and I could go on and on about it! ALSO!! If I have to be honest, this book started off pretty slow and was boring。 But towards the middle, things started to pick up! I think the whole concept of gaining the power of animals through their bones was really cool and the doomed romance concept was a breath of fresh air from what I usually read。 I don't think I have a favorite character, because my opinions about them were constantly changing throughout the book but I did like Sabine the most consistently, if that makes sense :) Looking for If I have to be honest, this book started off pretty slow and was boring。 But towards the middle, things started to pick up! I really enjoyed this book。 The world was fun and I thought the characters were great。 At first I wasn't sure how I felt about the changing povs because I wasn't sure who I should consider the MC, but they all worked together nicely。 You know I find a book pleasant when I write a short review like this 😂 I really enjoyed this book。 The world was fun and I thought the characters were great。 At first I wasn't sure how I felt about the changing povs because I wasn't sure who I should consider the MC, but they all worked together nicely。 You know I find a book pleasant when I write a short review like this 😂 。。。more

ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE BOOKS!!! This is seriously one of the best books I've read in a long time。 Everything from the character development, to the storyline, and then the romance that slowly forms between Bastien and Ailesse, and then HER MOTHER。 That part really made me mad。 If you've read the book, you know what I'm talking about but then after that and what her mother did。 WOW。 All I can say about her is WOW。 I genuinely thought something completely different was going to happen but the ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE BOOKS!!! I haven't really read a lot of books lately, so forgive me if I lack in reviewing。 I'm also not a fan of switch POV books, so sorry if I'm a bit biased there。 Also, forgive my spelling。 Overall Rating: B+ / Small A-Starting with the good, I would say this book has amazing detail。 I can almost picture most of the scenes in the book, which paints an amazing picture。 That being said, there is animal sacrifices (human, too) and semi-detailed animal killings。 If you are triggered by the graphic killi I haven't really read a lot of books lately, so forgive me if I lack in reviewing。 I'm also not a fan of switch POV books, so sorry if I'm a bit biased there。 Also, forgive my spelling。 Overall Rating: B+ / Small A-Starting with the good, I would say this book has amazing detail。 I can almost picture most of the scenes in the book, which paints an amazing picture。 That being said, there is animal sacrifices (human, too) and semi-detailed animal killings。 If you are triggered by the graphic killing of animals and blood, I would not recommend this book to you。Now the flaws。。。First, I feel like the most of the relationships in this book aren't being developed enough。 You hardly get to know some of the relationships before you're suddenly thrust into a new "phase" of the relationship。 Especially with the switch POVs, I feel like this book would have been a lot better if you focused on one character or one relationship, whether it be lovers or family。 Some of the relationships just seem so forced and used for plot, since you barely know what's going on between some characters。You don't really get to know the characters。 Sure, there is plenty of personality, but I felt distant from the characters。 I couldn't connect with them, like I usually would in other books。 There are so many characters and all have their unique story。 As I said previously, I think this book would have been better written if it was focused on one character。 I feel like this would have helped the clutter with all the events and helped the reader connect with one character。Towards the end, there are a lot of events that really divert my attention from the main purpose of the book。 It's hard to pay attention with so many events going on with switching POVs。 It makes it hard to keep track of what's going on。 Leaving one chapter on a cliffhanger is a good way to keep the reader reading, but here it feels very forced。 I want to keep reading, but I did not need another new event in every chapter to make me do that。Overall, I would recommend this book to people who are just looking for a fantasy book to read lightly, not very often。 It wasn't a bad book, I would have just liked to see a little more elaboration on the relationships。 I look forward to reading the next book。 :) 。。。more
